The Physics Department offers a minor in Physics to majors in any field except Physics. This minor gives students a broad exposure to the basic disciplines of physics and provides an opportunity for learning how these disciplines are applied in some of the frontier fields of Physics research.
Required Courses (11 - 12 credit hours)
PY 205 (or 201) Mechanics (4 cr)
PY 208 (or 202) Electricity and Magnetism (4 cr)
PY 407 (or 203) Modern Physics (3 or 4 cr.)
Elective Courses (6 credit hours)
Select 2 of the following courses:
PY 328 (Introduction to Stellar Astrophysics (3 cr)
PY 413 Thermal Physics (3 cr)
PY 341 Space time Physics (3 cr)
NOTE: Some upper level physics courses (PY 401 and 402, PY411 and 412, PY 414 and 415, and the PY 500 level courses) may be substituted for the courses in this group. Students must have prior written approval from the minor advisor listed below in order to exercise this option.
Admissions and Certification of Minor
To be admitted to the minor program, the student must have completed one (1) of the basic Physics sequences PY 205 & 208 or PY 201 & 202 with grades of ‘C’ or better. Required prerequisite courses in mathematics consist of MA 141, 241 and 242. Students should consult with the contact person listed below to discuss their interest in the minor.
The contact person listed below will certify the minor prior to graduation. The minor must be completed no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program.
