Admissions and Certification of Minor

Admissions

For all students:

  • Students may apply for the Music Minor electronically via the Music Minor Application Form or in person at the Music Department Office, 203 Price Music Center.
  • As part of the admissions process, each student is required to schedule an appointment with the Music Minor Advisor, Dr. John Fuller, to discuss a plan of study and the expectations established for the Music Minor. Dr. Fuller will arrange an opportunity for students to meet their Emphasis Advisor and the Applied Instructor, if necessary.

Performance Emphasis Requirements:

  • To be admitted into the Performance Emphasis, students must pass a Performance Emphasis audition, which they should schedule through the Music Minor Advisor. If the student does not meet the criteria for the Performance Emphasis, the Music Minor Advisor will recommend other possibilities available in the Music Minor program.
  • During each registration period, students are expected to discuss course registration with their Applied Instructor. They must then schedule an appointment with the Music Minor Advisor to have their plan of study reviewed.  This should take place before students meet with their Academic Advisor and enroll for the following semester's courses.
  • At the end of each semester, students must participate in a Performance Jury as a measure of their progress in the Performance Emphasis.
  • Students must enroll in MUS 493: Recital during the registration period preceding the final semester of the minor. At this time, recital requirements should be approved by the student's Applied Instructor and the Music Minor Advisor.
  • Students must complete a pre-recital jury approximately six weeks before their scheduled graduation recital.

Composition Emphasis Requirement:

  • Students must enroll in MUS 498: Independent Study in Music during the registration period preceding the final semester of the minor. At this time, the goals and timeline for completing the composition project should be approved by the student’s Emphasis Advisor and the Music Minor Advisor.

Certification

The Music Department Director, Dr. J. Mark Scearce, will certify the Music Minor prior to graduation. The minor must be completed no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program.  Paperwork for certification should be completed no later than the registration period prior to the student's final semester at NC State.
