Dropping A Course (from the Course Catalog and/or GEP)

Proposals to drop courses may be reviewed for impact to curricula across campus and a possible phase-out plan. If the course is included on a GEP (or GER) course list, this review will be conducted by the Council on Undergraduate Education (CUE).

When preparing to drop a course, please consider:

  • Any enrollment or resource related issues
  • Impact on other curricula that may require the course or include it as an elective.
  • Does the course serve as a pre-requisite for another course(s)? If so, notify department being affected. If affected course is within originating department, submit action to update pre-requisite listing for the affected course(s).
  • Status of the course as a GEP option for undergraduate students.
  • Need for consultation with other departments,  programs, or colleges.

GEP course clean-up:

GEP courses which have not been taught for three years and are not intended to be offered at a designated time in the future should be dropped from the GEP list. You should also consider dropping the course from the course catalog. This is particularly important in order that course listings in the GEP and in the Course Catalog offerings reflect active courses.

  • Consultation with other departments as applicable. (See also guidelines for consultation)
    • Include evidence of the consultation with any colleges or departments, other than the originating department, in which the course has been required or serves as a pre-requisite.
