Adding a Course to the General Education Program

Courses eligible to fulfill a General Education requirement are reflected on the appropriate GEP category course lists. These lists are are updated periodically as courses are added or dropped from a list.

Each GEP requirement has its own rationale and objectives. Course action proposals for a GEP course must provide documentation to show how the course is designed to enable a student to achieve the particular GEP category objectives.

Please note the Basic Criteria for General Education Program (GEP) Courses:

  • GEP courses should be generally available to all undergraduate students. Courses should be offered on a regular basis, and no more than 75% of the seats in any given section should be restricted. If all seats are restricted to a major(s), justification is required.
  • GEP courses should have no more than one prerequisite. If there is more than one pre-requisite, justification is required.
  • GEP courses should be offered on a regular basis.
  • GEP courses should also be a permanent offering (not a special topics or experimental course). Note: Because course outcomes must be aligned with GE objectives, courses designed to offer variable topics are not appropriate (courses in the 90-series such as special topics, seminars, independent study, etc.).

  2. Proposing an existing course for approval as a GEP course that will require revision to the course to meet the GEP category objectives.
See Existing Course to be added to GEP

  3. Proposing an existing course for approval as a GEP course that does not require any revision to the course.
See Existing Course to be added to GEP
